The first memory that I have is sleeping under my mother’s easel. When I was five years old, I sold my first pastel portrait for $1. Even as a little girl, I remember being fascinated with people. I wanted to watch them, understand them, and be able to create a story around their portrait. My paintings are stories; they are glimpses into someone else’s personality. The portrait is not about just achieving a likeness (although this is essential), its purpose is to capture the essence of that individual. My goal is to create a portrait that one hundred years from now the viewer will walk away feeling as if they had known that person.
I began studying seriously when I was in high school with my father (who was trained by his father Bjorn Egeli.) My skills developed rapidly and by the time I was nineteen years old, I had my first formal portrait commission. Followed by that were several full-length oil paintings, and many pastel head and shoulders. I am glad to say that I have had a successful career as a portrait artist and look forward to many more years of gratifying artistry.
